Selain terdapat situs-situs tempat karya seni dipamerkan, ada beberapa lokasi yang dibiarkan begitu saja karena keindahannya yang khas. Gestur ini merupakan usaha kami untuk menolak dorongan manusiawi dan bentuk-bentuk penaklukan ruang di alam yang diamini keindahannya secara umum. Ketika sebuah lokasi indah ‘ditemukan’ di alam, umumnya manusia memiliki dorongan untuk menaklukkannya dan membuatnya ‘lebih nyaman’ untuk dinikmati. Terkadang dorongan untuk ‘memperindah’ dalam standar masing-masing justru membuat ruang tersebut hilang keindahan alaminya. Maka, secara penuh kesadaran kami sebagai sebuah institusi menolak untuk menaruh karya seni di lokasi-lokasi tersebut dan mengundang pengunjung untuk mengalami alam tersebut sebagaimana adanya.

Situs Apresiasi #1: Pohon Rosomolo

Pohon Rosomolo ini ditanam sekitar tahun 1974 dan berada di lokasi hutan penelitian yang dilindungi. Konon katanya saat terkena awan panas saat erupsi Merapi tahun 2006 silam, pohon Rosomolo merupakan salah satu yang mampu bertahan hidup dan segera kembali hijau bahkan setelah bencana.

Situs Apresiasi #2: Katedral Bambu

Saat cahaya matahari bersinar melalui pohon-pohon bambu tersebut, lorong bambu terlihat menyerupai katedral alami. Terkadang masyarakat menggunakan bambu tersebut dalam skala kecil, sebanyak yang mereka butuhkan saja. Area bambu ini juga merupakan area resapan air yang baik. Karena berada di area hutan lindung, tanaman-tanaman di sekitarnya ilegal untuk dipetik sehingga terjaga keasliannya.

Situs Apresiasi #3: Jembatan Cengkrama

Jembatan kuno ini dibangun sebagai penghubung antara area pemukiman warga dengan hutan lindung. Sayangnya, dulu air mancur dan aliran sungai di bawah jembatan ini kerap digunakan sebagai pembuangan sampah dari kawasan wisata Tlogo Putri sehingga masih menyisakan sedikit aroma kurang sedap saat udara panas.

Situs Apresiasi Khusus: Oncen-Oncen

Karya ini bukan bagian dari 900mdpl tapi situs ini membuat kami berpikir ulang tentang karya seni site-specific. Ketika kami berjalan di area ini bersama beberapa orang yang berbeda, banyak yang berkomentar miring tentang 'patung' ini. Kerap mereka berkelakar bahwa ini semacam versi KW dari Yayoi Kusama, atau sekedar mengomentari betapa anehnya patung tersebut. 

Ketika kami menelusuri kisah tentang patung ini, kami menemukan beberapa fakta menarik: Pertama, patung ini dibuat oleh beberapa seniman lokal di Kaliurang di masa pandemi dan menjadi tumpuan hajat hidup beberapa pihak disaat pariwisata terhenti total. Kedua, patung ini bukan patung melainkan toilet yang fungsional.

Ketiga, ketika seniman-seniman lokal ini ditugaskan untuk membuat toilet di area hutan penelitian ini, mereka mencari bentuk yang paling mewakili kekhususan lokasi ini.

Ketika menyadari bahwa toilet akan dibangun di area habitat oncen-oncen alias stroberi hutan, mereka menyepakati bentuk oncen-oncen merupakan bentuk yang paling pas untuk mewakili kekhasan area ini. Jika diperhatikan, hingga kini di sekitar lokasi toilet masih terdapat stroberi hutan yang asli. Seluruh hal tersebut membuat karya ini layak mendapatkan panggung karena kekuatan konteksnya, kedekatan atas situasi lingkungan, dan sekaligus tetap fungsional.

In addition to the sites where artworks are being exhibited, there are some locations that are left alone for their exceptional beauty.  This gesture is our attempt to resist and defy human’s impulses to conquer a space in nature for its beauty.  When a beautiful location is 'found' in nature, humans generally have the urge to colonize it and make it 'more comfortable' for them to enjoy. Sometimes the urge to 'beautify' in their respective standards actually makes the space lose its natural beauty. So, 900mdpl as an institution consciously refuses to put art in these locations and invite visitors to experience nature as it really is.

Appreciation Site #1: Rosomolo Tree

This Rosomolo tree was planted around 1974 and is located in a protected research forest site. It is said that when the tree was hitted by hot volcanic clouds during the 2006 eruption of Mt.Merapi, yet, the Rosomolo trees are among those that were able to survive and immediately turn green even after the disaster.

Appreciation Site #2: Bamboo Cathedral

When sunlight shines through the bamboo trees, the bamboo passages look like a natural cathedral.  Sometimes people are permitted to use these bamboos on a small scale, taking as much as they need.  This bamboo area is also considered a good water catchment area. Located in a protected forest area, the surrounding plants around the bamboo are illegal to pick so that their authenticity is maintained.

Appreciation Site #3: Cengkrama Bridge

This old bridge was built as a link between the residential area and the protected forest.  Unfortunately, in the past, the fountain and river flowing under this bridge were often used as a garbage disposal from the Tlogo Putri tourist area so that it still left a slightly unpleasant smell when the air was hot, even to this day.

Special Appreciation Site: Oncen-Oncen

This is not part of artist's project for 900mdpl but this 'statue' made us rethink the site-specificity of an artwork. When we walked around this area with several different people, many commented negatively about this 'sculpture'.  They often joke that this is some kind of cheap fake version of Yayoi Kusama, or simply comment on how strange the statue is.

When we traced back the story behind this statue, we found some interesting facts: First, this statue was made by several local artists in Kaliurang during the pandemic and became the foundation of their livelihood when tourism came to a complete halt.  Second, this statue is not actually a statue but a functional toilet. Third, when these local artists were assigned to make toilets in this forest research-area, they looked for the shape that best represented the specificity of this location.

When they realized that the toilet is designed to be built in the habitat of ​​the oncen-oncen or the wild forest strawberries, they agreed that the oncen-oncen form was the most appropriate form to represent the uniqueness and particularity of this area.  If you pay closer attention, you can still find the real wild forest strawberries around the toilet area.  All of these things make this work worthy of a highlight because of the strength of its context, proximity to environmental specificity, and at the same time remaining functional.
